"Non molare mai / 16-02-2013" or "Never give up" (in Italian)
Just as he came on the radar of WorldTour team Orica-GreenEDGE, Esteban Chaves (COL/Mitchelton-Scott) crashed hard on 16 february 2013 during the Trofeo Laigueglia race (in Italy). He lost all mobility in his right arm and (most) doctors deemed his procycling career over... except for 1.
That doctor operated on Esteban and a (VERY) intense and long recovery period, without certainty of result, followed.
Although chances for full recovery were very slim, Team Orica-GreenEDGE took the young Colombian on board for 2014 and gave him all the time he needed.
... the rest is history.
Esteban Chaves got on to win many beautiful races; won monument classics and ended up on Grand Tour podiums.
The bound between team and rider is therefore extremely loyal and strong.
