There was quite a bit of commedia dell'arte drama at the start of stage 16 after it had already been altered in the days prior to take the peloton over the Umbrailpass instead of the Stelvio, but riders protested the idea of racing the high-altitude climb in miserable conditions (sleet snow and freezing temperatures) and enforced the extreme weather protocol via the CPA. Organizers ultimately cut the Umbrailpass out of the stage as well, moved the (re-)start to Prato di Stelvio and shortened it to 120km, a far cry from the originally planned 206km.
